THE VELDHUIJZEN VAN ZANTEN FAMILY
The nursery that Rutgerd Veldhuyzen Van Zanten buys in 1822 is named ‘Veelzorg’ (‘Much care’); after the great passion and care he spends on his cultivations. Rutgerd passes on this dedication to his sons. In 1862, his son Gerrit buys the piece of ground next to the railway track in Hillegom where he lays the basis for Van Zanten. He turns out be an entrepreneur with an international mindset and makes a sensation with his flower bulbs in North America from the end of the 19th century.
