Growing plants is the most beautiful thing there is, according to grower Jeroen Berkhout. The fact that the plants in his greenhouse happen to be chrysanthemums is simply because he now knows the most about them. And the challenge for Jeroen and his brother Paul lies in growing those chrysanthemums just a little better every year.
After a successful career as a teacher at a horticultural school in Switzerland, their father decided to start growing chrysanthemums in 1987. He began his nursery in Kwintsheul, in the heart of the horticultural sector, cultivating cut chrysanthemums. Today, his sons, Paul and Jeroen, are in charge of the company, which now grows 3.8 hectares of potted chrysanthemums.
Jeroen explains: “At our company, almost anything is possible: we have a wide range of options in all the colours you could want. We can also adjust packaging and trays to our customer’s preferences, as long as the chrysanthemums are in pot size 12!”
Jellyfish
Since April, Berkhout has also been growing the chrysanthemum line Jellyfish. “A beautiful plant with many small, round flowers. My favorite is the orange variety, with a dark center. As growers, we also appreciate that this line is an efficient grower in our greenhouse. While most chrysanthemums take about 8 weeks to bloom in the summer, Jellyfish does so in just 7 weeks. I’m also pleased with its shelf life and colour variety. Our customers are always happy to see a beautiful colour mix on the trolley or in the tray.”
Milkshake
Besides Jellyfish, Berkhout also grows other chrysanthemum lines. Milkshake has been a favorite in the company for years. With its cheerful colour mix and hardy winter characteristics, this line stands out on the store shelves.”
